Exploring the Food (In)Security Status of Suburban Households and Its Determinants during COVID-19

Household food insecurity in South African suburban low-income households is a major challenge. Research outcomes that will inform decisions on effective solutions towards reducing household Africa are essential. The purpose of this study was firstly to determine the security status and skills members Ward 60 Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Eastern Cape Province Africa. Secondly, it also association between socioeconomic demographic variables their level (in-)security. employed mixed method both qualitative quantitative methodologies, comprising Community-Based Participatory Action (CBPAR) methodology survey methodology. A using questionnaire based Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS). used collect data from 170 randomly selected households. analysis HFIAS score logistic regression analysis. results show 6.1% as secure, 3.05% mildly insecure, 13.4% moderately 77.4% severely insecure. significant unemployment rate, reliance social grants, absence income seriously impact extent insecurity. unemployment, income, gender. suggest gender, size, age, employment, influence security. had variety skills.
